All-terrain Tire Type

All-weather tires have many of the same features of an all-season tire with a better tread life and a quieter ride than a dedicated winter tire. They also carry the 3-Peak Mountain Snowflake rating, which qualifies them as a winter traction tire. These tires are made from a special rubber compound that stays flexible and pliable in colder temperatures.  This type of tire performs like an all-season tire outside the winter months.

Rib tire type

Winter tires are designed to work in temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Their rubber compounds are designed to remain flexible in cold temperatures, which allow them to continuously grip in cold weather. Winter tires also have special tread patterns that help them grip into snowy conditions.  Though they provide better traction in ice as well, when compared to all-season tires, many winter tires allow the installation of metal studs, which increases slip prevention. Winter tires are best for people that live in places with significant snowfall and where temperatures remain at or below freezing for extended periods of time, such as the northeast.

These tires offer great performance in cornering, accelerating and braking, but are only at their best when temperatures are warm. Because of that rubber compound, summer tires have much shorter tread life than other types of tires. These tires are designed for sports cars and performance vehicles.
